As we enter March 2021, many of us are looking back on the past 12 months in disbelief. It’s normal to think about a difficult time and be down, but I try to see the good that has come from it, and there’s a lot that’s good in Beverly/Morgan Park.
Once again, the positive attitude of our community is keeping us going. Barney Callaghan’s slogan, “We will march again,” sums up that spirit. The South Side Irish Parade may not be marching down Western this month, but the events and opportunities that will be happening give us hope and a new outlook.
Once again, we will celebrate our annual traditions differently. We’re very lucky to have immense creativity and the passion to keep marching on, especially to support a good cause. Here are some examples of what is happening this month:
The annual Chicago Polar Plunge befitting the Special Olympics Chicago and Special Children’s Charities programs will be a virtual version, but it’s still marching on.
Pat Mac’s Pack is hosting its annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser as a virtual event. They’ve collaborated with Horse Thief Hollow on a beer that’s named for Pat McNamara, and that will help raise funds to support families battling pediatric cancer and vital research at Lurie Children’s Hospital. This dedicated group won’t let COVID stop them. They are marching on.
BAPA is collaborating with our friends and businesses on Western to bring the spirit of the South Side Irish Parade into your homes. Our party pack for 4 is filled with local food, beverages and specialties, and ready to purchase so you can help our businesses keep marching on. Find details on page 9.
The Shamrock Your Block home decorating contest and yard signs hosted by the South Side Irish Parade Committee is providing funds for our local businesses. They are marching on too. Get details at www.southsideirishparade.org
BAPA is marching on too. We are planning our 2021 events (expect some exciting changes!) and we will share the details with you soon. In addition to our events, look for our green initiatives, school spirit and safety campaigns, and small business support programs.
Cheers to a community that never quits! It’s time to celebrate.
