Village Viewpoint – April 2024

 By Mary Jo Viero

As we look ahead to April, some exciting events are happening. Epic events!  I am talking about the Great North American Solar Eclipse that takes place on April 8 and will not happen again until 2078. The second event could start in April and last through June. I am talking about a once-in-a-lifetime Cicada Invasion.  This happens when one brood emerges every 13 years and the other brood comes every 17 years and this year they are coming at the same time which means we can expect close to 37 million Cicadas in Illinois alone. The last time this natural phenomenon happened was 221 years ago.  To me, it’s icky and cool at the same time.

These are not our typical springtime events but hopefully, they will do what our BAPA community events do. Bring our neighborhood together for fun, connection, and community building.

I hope to see our neighbors and school kids outside with glasses on watching the eclipse. It will be fun if we embrace it and take advantage of it. We have received calls from people looking for solar eclipse glasses and BAPA connected them with our local libraries.

As for the Cicadas, we’ve also had some residents reach out to us with concerns about the Cicadas and their potential harm to our newly planted trees. We love it when people call BAPA for these types of questions and concerns because our job is to connect you with the answers. That goes for anything, if we don’t know the answer, we do our best to find out.

For BAPA, the Cicadas are going to be a little tricky. We have 5 outdoor events from now until mid-June, including two Porch Concerts, the annual Home Tour, and the Ridge Run and Memorial Day Parade. Just like any outdoor event, we have to take what comes and do our best to deliver what we promised.  Rain, wind, hot, cold, cicadas, or whatever nature has planned.

Our Clean and Green is up first on April 27 and I ask that you come out no matter what the weather is and take an hour or two to join others across the community to clean up our winter debris and make our community shine.

We have rakes, bags, and plenty of spaces that need attention. Just sign up at bapa.org  to reserve a volunteer shirt.

Speaking of volunteers, we have plenty of ways to get involved.  Our upcoming Home Tour on May 19 and Ridge Run on May 27 have many openings for volunteers.  Please call if you have questions or visit our website to sign up.

In honor of Earth Day, I will end with one of my favorite quotes from Jane Goodall.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Happy Spring,
