Unity Walk A Success

On Sunday, November 19, close to 200 neighbors from our community walked together to show support for each other. It was called the “Neighbors Supporting Neighbors Walk for Unity.” BAPA Executive Director Mary Jo Viero welcomed the crowd who gathered at Starbucks on 103rd and Longwood Dr. and thanked neighbor Nick LoMaglio, who founded Advice Beyond the Classroom, for the idea.

“I felt like the community wanted to do something after the recent incidents that shook our community, but no one knew what to do,” Viero said. “Nick suggested doing a walk and I felt like it was the perfect answer.” After her remarks, Pastor Larry Sullivan of Christ the King Church said a prayer.

Jahmal Cole founder of My Block, My Hood, My City, followed and introduced himself and shared his passion for community involvement. He encouraged the crowd to continue to stand together. The crowd walked together north on Longwood Drive to Cosme Park. The walkers were welcomed by the Cosme Park Advisory Council and treated to coffee and donuts. As the event ended, everyone left with a sense of pride in their community and a new reason to love where they live.
