PLAID Academy Students Cook County Assessor’s Office
Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios welcomed students from PLAID Academy to the Assessor’s Office in March. The students, escorted by PLAID Academy Director Jean Altman, learned about how many properties are located in Cook County, how property is assessed and other things related to the work of Assessor Berrios and his staff. “Meeting the children of our County and seeing their interest in how government works is always wonderful to see,” said Assessor Berrios. “We enjoyed answering their questions and seeing their enthusiasm.” Each student received literature from the Assessor’s Office and a souvenir coin with the Seal of Cook County.
Council Oak Montessori School Hosts Motown in Chicago
Council Oak Montessori School invites area residents to Motown in Chicago, Sat., Apr. 22, 6 to 10 p.m., Ridge Country Club, 10522 S. California. The school, which has been providing quality Montessori education in Beverly/Morgan Park for 27 years, hopes to raise $20,000 in scholarship funds as the community honors its founding families and celebrates its future.
Motown in Chicago promises a lively evening of dancing, music, games, and silent and live auctions. The live auction features original artwork by Council Oak Montessori School students and items like a week-long vacation rental in Lake County. Silent auction items include a captained sailboat day or sunset cruise, tickets to sports events and gift certificates to restaurants and entertainment venues in the Chicago area.
Just as Motown changed the shape of music many years ago, Council Oak Montessori School continues to change the perception of education with the methods of Maria Montessori. The school steps into the new academic year by expanding access to high quality education with the purchase of an elementary school building in Blue Island. In the new facility, students will enjoy the full breadth of Dr. Montessori’s educational philosophy and an expanded indoor/outdoor curriculum, with abundant green space and the Cal Sag River at its doorstep.
Local artists will create centerpieces depicting the history of Council Oak Montessori School using old photos and the original hand-crafted materials created by the founders when the school first opened. The school’s three founding families – Karen and Ken Brienzo, Doris and Pat Cox, Marsha and John Enright — will be honored for their 27 years of service in education to the neighborhood.
Council Oak will continue to partner on various projects with Morgan Park United Methodist Church, in which the school was located since it first opened its doors in 1990. Event tickets are $25 and available at 773-779-7606 or www.eventbrite.com, search Motown in Chicago.
