Popular BAPA Events Get Makeovers for 2016

Interactive Hospitality: Beverly Hills/Morgan Park Home Tour

On Sun., May 15, the Beverly Area Planning Association (BAPA) will host its 45th Beverly Hills/Morgan Park Home Tour. Showcasing five of the neighborhood’s most beautiful homes and gardens, the 2016 version of the Home Tour will also feature a lot of interactive hospitality including cooking, art and decorating demonstrations; advice from experts who worked on the featured homes; tastings; specialty shopping and restaurant specials; and lots more.

This year, the Beverly Hills/Morgan Park Home Tour will start at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity where tour-goers will enjoy the sponsor/vendor fair and enjoy a guided tour of the historic church. Featured homes range from a handsome Prairie style home that was the first house on its block, to a sleek contemporary house that overlooks a spectacular garden, and an elegant Victorian with French and Italian style gardens.

Reservations for the 45th Home Tour are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, and available now online Eventbrite or at the BAPA office. Ridge Run: 39 Years Young

BAPA will host the 39th annual Ridge Run and Beverly Hills/Morgan Park/Mount Greenwood Memorial Day Parade on May 30, and some fun and challenging changes are in store for these popular neighborhood events. Little Company of Mary Hospital is the top sponsor of the Ridge Run.

The biggest change is the new route for the 10K race. In January, an official from the USA Track & Field (USATF) measured every step of the new 6.2 mile route, and it was officially certified! The 10K will stay north of 111th Street, sending runners up the hill on 110th Street, winding down Bell and Oakley Avenues to 108th Place where it reconnects to Longwood Drive at the bottom of the hill.

Instead of ending on Longwood Drive, the Ridge Run finish lines for the 10K and 5K will be located in Ridge Park, taking runners through the park to the new festival area where there will be music, food and beer, children’s activities, sponsor information, race results and runner refreshments. Cork and Kerry is the Ridge Run beer sponsor.   The Memorial Day Parade will also march right into Ridge Park, leading participants and spectators into the park for the laying of the wreath and Memorial Day ceremony.

The Ridge Run /Memorial Day Parade is sponsored by Little Company of Mary Hospital. Other sponsors are Mike Haggerty Buick, GMC, Volkswagen, Beverly Bank & Trust, Southtown Health Foods, AT&T, Beverly Hills Animal Hospital, 19th Ward Youth Foundation, Marathon Sportswear, Cork & Kerry, The Beverly Review.

Fundraiser Supports Memorial Day Parade

Area residents are welcome to show their support for BAPA’s Beverly Hills/Morgan Park/Mount Greenwood Memorial Day Parade at a fundraiser Sat., Apr. 9, 3 to 6 p.m., at Cork & Kerry, 10614 S. Western Ave. Admission is $30 and includes food, open bar, raffles and more.

One of Chicago’s oldest community parades, it follows the Ridge Run on the morning of Memorial Day, Mon., May 30. Funds raised at the Apr. 9 event will enable BAPA and the parade committee to present an event that truly honors the reason for Memorial Day: remembering the men and women who have fought and died in the United States armed forces.

Grand Marshal of the 2016 parade is Gary W. Schenkel, Executive Director of the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) and a retired United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel. In his career in public service, Schenkel has served at the most senior level in the Department of Defense, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and in Federal law enforcement.

Raffles and giveaways will add to the spirit of the fundraiser. Area businesses interested in donating items or gifts can contact Carol Macola, c_macola@hotmail.com or Brian Schilller, brianschiller15@gmail.com or 708-625-5933. Raffle donations can also be dropped off at the BAPA office, 1987 W. 111th St., Chicago, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. For fundraiser tickets, go to Eventbrite.com and search Memorial Day Parade Fundraiser with the date April 9. Tickets will also be available at the door.

There’s nothing like a cold beverage on a hot summer night, and fans of BAPA’s Beverly Hills Cycling Classic can look forward to a variety of craft beer options as the popular event evolves into the new Bikes & Brews on Fri., July 15.

The Prairie State Cycling Series will return to present men’s and women’s pro-am cycle racing in the heart of the community. The festival area at 107th and Longwood Drive will feature several popular breweries including Horse Thief Hollow, One Trick Pony, Revolution, Half Acre and Argus.
