Old House Lecture Series Inspires Preservation Enthusiasts

On April 23, history came alive at the Ridge Historical Society as the Beverly Area Planning Association (BAPA) hosted its much-anticipated Old House Lecture Series event. With a crowd of 25 attendees, the evening was dedicated to unraveling the secrets of preserving vintage homes.

Presenters Tim Blackburn and Mike Wilk, members of the Ridge Historical Society’s board, engaged the audience with their insights and expertise. They delved into the neighborhood’s various historic districts and the rules and regulations attached to owning a home in a historic district. They went on to discuss the intricate process of researching the history of one’s home, emphasizing the importance of photographs and architectural styles in guiding restoration efforts. Their advice provided homeowners with the tools needed to embark on the journey of restoring their vintage properties. They stressed the positives of preserving original wood and materials instead of replacing them with newer, cheaper materials. Vintage photos of well-known homes in the community were shown accompanied with stories of the original and past owners providing insight into the home’s unique history.

The “Old House Lecture Series” was designed to educate attendees on preservation techniques and instill a sense of appreciation for the rich architectural heritage in our neighborhood. It is another way BAPA strives to provide our residents with knowledge and resources.

Attendees left inspired and equipped with newfound knowledge, ready to begin their preservation projects. BAPA extends its heartfelt thanks to Tim Blackburn, Mike Wilk, and the Ridge Historical Society for their contribution and partnership for this inaugural event.

Stay tuned for future installments of the Old House Lecture Series as BAPA remains committed to promoting the preservation of our neighborhood’s historic treasures.
