Residents of Beverly/Morgan Park have a variety of new food options to check out as they ring in 2024. We’ve rounded up a few of the new places to check out.
O’Kelly’s Bakery: An Irish bakery now takes up the Western Avenue space that previously housed the Bridgeport and Hardboiled coffee companies.
Owner Imelda Daly Kelly said she’s been baking her own goods for about 25 years and figured it was time to share her treats with the masses by opening her own shop. She’s partnering with Brian O’Neill, owner of the space at 9135 S. Western Ave. on the bakery that opened in November.
“It’s been really quite good so far,” said Kelly, a native of County Offaly Ireland. “Everyone seems to love us.”
O’Kelly’s offers the popular Irish soda bread, in addition to an array of pies such as key lime and silk, which Kelly said have been among the most frequently ordered items so far. Bridgeport Coffee is still served at the location, too.
“We have a lot of authentic, traditional recipes here,” Kelly said. “We know it can be tough to get all the Irish products in one place, but we’re trying to offer everything in one spot.”
Sanders BBQ Supply Co.: Things are moving ever closer to opening for the Sanders BBQ Supply Co. at the former Pizzeria Deepo location at 1742 W. 99th St., just steps from the Metra station.
James Sanders, owner and chef, says he’s now targeting a February opening.
“It’s looking like February… maybe late February, but we are on the right track,” Sanders said.
Once open, Sanders BBQ will offer authentic, Texas-style barbecue from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Soul Food Lounge 2: Chef Quentin Nelson recently introduced the Soul Food Lounge 2 to the city’s South Side when he recently opened his restaurant at 10701 S. Hale Ave.
“An amazing menu experience” awaits those who order the “Grand Tasting” item found atop the menu. It’s “a culinary landscape” globally curated by the renowned chef Love, the menu states.
The menu includes popular food items from across the globe, including a Hong Kong Honey Shrimp, New Orleans Gumbo Yakamein and Italian Bruschetta Chicken, among others.
Soul Food Lounge 2 is open 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 12 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
