Meet BAPA’s New Board of Directors President, Dr. Whitney Castle

By Brian Marchetti

The Beverly Area Planning Association has recently selected Dr. Whitney Castle as its newest president of its Board of Directors. Her long ties to the neighborhood and her experience as a local business owner makes her the ideal candidate for the role.

Having grown up in Beverly/Morgan Park at 109th and Prospect, Dr. Castle attended both Morgan Park Academy and St. Barnabas. After graduating from St. Ignatius High School, she traveled to southern California and studied at Whittier College then finished her Bachelor of Science at DePaul University. She earned a doctorate in Podiatric medicine and has been practicing ever since.

Her time living in other communities throughout the country and Chicagoland fostered a deeper appreciation for the uniqueness of the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood.

“I’m so thankful that I live here,” Dr. Castle said. “I love that we get to know our neighbors. You walk down the street, and someone says hi to you. It’s like a suburb within a city.”

While Dr. Castle knew of BAPA’s involvement in the neighborhood in her youth, she didn’t fully understand its impact until she became a local business owner. Almost five years ago, she and business partner Dr. Sabrina Landers opened Keir Foot and Ankle Specialist at 11628 S. Western Ave. BAPA proved instrumental in helping Dr. Castle’s business engage with the community.

“They really helped us get our name out,” Dr. Castle said.

Two years ago, Dr. Castle joined the BAPA board as its secretary. In that role, she witnessed all the work BAPA does to maintain the neighborhood, not only in its appearance, but in regard to safety and diversity of businesses as well.

As she takes the helm as board president, she hopes to expand the number of board members to 12 or 13. Expanding membership will lead to more community engagement.

“I’m hoping to recruit members from the neighborhood and the local business community,” Dr. Castle said. “We want people who are willing to collaborate on a lot of different projects.”

When Dr. Castle isn’t leading the board of directors or treating patients at her practice, she enjoys traveling to places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, spending time with her new husband, and going on long walks with her two dogs. Dr. Castle and her neighbors have a fun tradition they coined the “Flamingle,” a casual party involving friends and summertime drinks.

In her role as board president, Dr. Castle looks forward to having a positive impact on the community she loves.

“It has been really amazing,” Dr. Castle said. “When you work with BAPA, you learn more about the neighborhood, about all the things going on.”
