Finalists and winning works in the Beverly Art Center’s 44th annual art competition are on exhibit through May 21 at the Center, 2407 W. 111th St. The juried competition was founded in 1976 by real estate developer Arthur Rubloff and local artists Bill and Judie Anderson, and prizes are funded through Beverly Bank & Trust. Gallery admission is free.  

New works by playwrights age 18 and up are currently being accepted for consideration for the Beverly Arts Center’s New Playwrights Festival (July 26-Aug. 1). Works must be unpublished, one act or full length. Submissions are due by May 9 and will be read by three jurors. Seven plays will be chosen for the festival of staged readings which will be rated by three professional judges and the audience; the play with the most points will receive a fully-staged production in the BAC’s 2021-22 Professional Theater Series. Info/submissions at beverlyartcenter.org. 

BACinema presents “Frida,” the life artist Frida Kahlo shared with Diego Rivera and how the young couple took the art world by storm, Sun., May 16, 2 p.m., Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St. Limited audience capacity masks and social distancing required. $8 ($7 for BAC members).  

BAC for Free offers free, three-week demo workshops with Beverly Art Center’s School of the Arts teaching artists, May 17 through June 1. Options include virtual and in-person, limited class sizes. Registration is first come, first served. Info and registration at beverlyartcenter.org.
