Finding Waldo in the 19th Ward

Statues of the iconic book character will make their way into 25 local shops throughout Beverly/Morgan Park and Mount Greenwood through July.

The “Where’s Waldo?” scavenger hunt is sure to keep the neighborhood abuzz about shopping local during the height of summer as the legendary book character will make his way into 25 businesses in the 19th Ward.

A 6-inch-high Waldo statue and other fun findables will be placed in stores in Beverly/Morgan Park and Mount Greenwood throughout July, Rich Wojcikowski, operations manager at Bookie’s, said. Participants will get a card stamped for every Waldo they find in the stores, with prizes on the line at an August 3 party to celebrate the initiative at Bookie’s, 10324 S. Western Ave.

Bookie’s took the lead on the local installment of the small business support initiative created by Penguin Random House, publisher of the Waldo books that have featured a distinctive character with glasses wearing red and white in crowded scenes throughout the world since the mid 1980s. The scavenger hunt supports small businesses in participating communities across America while keeping the iconic Waldo character alive and relevant for the next generation.

“The stores will hide the Waldo statues wherever they want in their stores as long as people can access them,” Wojcikowski said. “Once they find it, someone with the store will sign the card.”

When people gather 10 signatures, they will get a coupon, and then a more valuable coupon when collecting 15, he added.

“Our main goal is to increase foot traffic for small businesses’, especially a place like here, a bookstore, when it can be such a slow time of year in the summertime. It’s a great way to get families with kids involved in something right here in the neighborhood during the summer.”
