Part of Facepalm August
In the annals of awful sequels, this is a film that…you won’t find, because it really is not a sequel to Troll at all, given its entirely different plot and utter lack of actual trolls. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Troll 2 stands alone. Made in 1990 by an obscure Italian director who wanted to make a horror film in North America, and was willing to capitalize on the success of an earlier, unrelated film to do so, Troll 2 improbably managed to ascend the ranks of a specific brand of movie-dom: the disastrously incoherent, strange, unintentionally hilarious bomb-movies that still found their (unexpected) audience and live on in the hearts of many today. Come take a vacation to the rural paradise of Nilbog with the Waits family and be prepared to realize with them—because you definitely won’t see this twist coming at all—the horrifying truth about who inhabits the town (hint: it’s Nilbog spelled backwards). Is there any way out? One answer is for certain: there is no way out of seeing this facepalm-masterpiece on the big screen. The Beverly Arts Center is screening Troll 2! Oh My Gawwwwwd!
