Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

John Hughes (1950-2009) was the quintessential Chicago filmmaker, a writer-director who explored the nuances of the Chicagoland area and the character of its people like no other. Though he’s also known for his whimsical stories of teenage misfits and screwballs, his masterpiece as a director (in this film programmer’s humble opinion) is likely Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), a screwball comedy for people from all walks of life, but especially adults in the throes of a midlife crisis. Somewhat curmudgeonly businessman Neal Page (Steve Martin) needs to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family, but he’s sidetracked by a snowstorm that cancels his flight. Faced with no other option, he accepts a carpool with a shower curtain ring salesman and slobbish loudmouth (John Candy) who he finds himself stuck with for days on end. Can the two men make it to Chicago without tearing each other’s heads off? Find out this Thanksgiving!
