A truly contemporary Christmas movie must have a few specific bells and whistles: elaborate jokes about 50 Shades of Gray, drunken misadventures, plenty of cell phone usage and Lena Dunham. Prolific Chicago Writer-Director Joe Swanberg’s (creator of Netflix’s Easy) 2014 feature has all those, but they all take a backseat to a story about family bonds and growing up (or trying to). Anna Kendrick plays Jenny, a twenty-something reeling from a Christmas season breakup, who moves in with her older brother Jeff (Swanberg) and his wife, Kelly (Melanie Lynsky) to try and sort her life out. Instead, she ends up throwing their lives, as well as the life of her high-school best friend (Dunham) completely out of whack. Shot on grainy 16mm film, the film has the look and feel of a modern holiday dramedy viewed through the lens of an old tree ornament.
