BAC: Revenge of the Mekons
February 19, 2020 @ 7:30 pm
It is probably the lyrics of The Mekon’s songs that best describe the lifespan and trajectory of the band itself. “When I was waiting in the bar/where were you?” “Come on, cruel world/Show me what you got.” “I was out late the other night/fear and whiskey kept me going.” Though they have existed, in various forms since the late 70s and were trailblazers of the genres of post-punk and country rock, the group has never received anything close to the acclaim or widespread attention of similar (and even derivative) groups from the same time period. Bluntly political and sometimes caustic, not to mention utterly unpredictable in their musical styles and arrangements on a song-by-song basis, The Mekons have survived being dropped by a major label, albums being shelved, hiatuses, and member changes to be one of the most enduring rock groups in history.
Revenge of The Mekons, a 2013 documentary, chronicles the lifespan of the band from their origins in working-class Leeds to rural Kazakhstan and Chicago (where several key members are now based and active). Grab the cheapest, frothiest beer you can find at concessions and bring your working class rage!
