An Evening of Irish Music with Liz Carroll And Special Guests
Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, world-renowned fiddler Liz Carroll returns to Chicago with special guests Maeve Gilchrist & Nic Gareiss and Open the Door for Three. The night will feature traditional Irish tunes that will transport you to the grassy fields and blue skies of Ireland.
Liz Carroll is an Irish fiddler, composer, and recording artist. She is the first Irish-American musician to be nominated for a Grammy, and the first American-born composer honored with the Cumadóir TG4, Ireland’s most significant traditional music prize. Liz has toured as a solo artist and with the Greenfields of America, Trian, as the duo Liz Carroll & John Doyle, String Sisters, and now as a duo with guitarist and pianist Jake Charron. She is featured on fourteen albums and has appeared on many more, and her duet album with Jake Charron, Half Day Road, was released in February, 2019. Liz was born in Chicago of Irish parents, and still lives in the area.
Edinburgh harpist Maeve Gilchrist and Michigan-born percussive dancer Nic Gareiss explore the sonic and choreographic possibilities of fingers and feet, rapidly gaining renown as one of the most innovative duos to emerge from the American acoustic roots scene. Touring together as part of Grammy-nominated fiddler Darol Anger’s band, the duo made their debut at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, Scotland. Sharing a deep respect for traditional arts while drawing on contemporary elements of sound, movement, rhythm and improvisation, the duo re-imagines harping and step dance to approach original composition as well as traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, and the United States. The percussion and drive of Nic’s footwork combined with Maeve’s melodic and improvisational sensibilities make for an explosive duet sure to delight both the ears and the eyes.
Open the Door for Three is fiddle player Liz Knowles, uilleann piper Kieran O’Hare, and Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Pat Broaders. Their music is a rare combination of unearthed tunes from centuries-old collections, newly composed melodies, fresh arrangements of songs old and new, homages to the musicians and bands they grew up listening to, and the unmatched energy of a trio of good friends playing great Irish music together.
