BAPA Sponsor Spotlight: OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center

By Brian Marchetti

Hospitals serve an essential role in any community, not just in the space of treating the sick, but also, in prevention and education. For generations, OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center has provided the southwest side of Chicago with these crucial resources. Their sponsorship of this year’s Ridge Run gave them the opportunity not only to assist event participants, but also share information with the community about their programs.

While the main hospital is located at 2850 W. 95th Street in Evergreen Park, OSF has offices in every community it serves, including Beverly/Morgan Park, Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Palos, and Burbank.

Sponsoring events gives OSF an opportunity to meet with the people they serve and let them know about the many programs they have available.

“The Ridge Run is one of the larger events that we sponsor,” said Octavia Bonds, OSF’s public relations and communications director. “It’s a great event that brings out thousands of people from the community.”

At this year’s Ridge Run, OSF had two tents. One staffed with medical professionals who provided assistance to runners and another that offered giveaways and information about the hospital’s many services which include information about treatment and prevention of diabetes, strokes, and details about their cancer outreach center.

“We do about eighty events a year,” Bonds said. “It’s important for us to get out there because people in the community aren’t aware of all the programs we offer.”

Though we live in an age with easily accessible information, not everyone in the community has knowledge of or the ability to find these resources. Events like the Ridge Run give organizations like OSF a chance to meet people face to face and inform them of services they may not have been aware of otherwise.”

“I really enjoy the Ridge Run,” Bonds said. “You get to impact so many people and they leave with so much information.”

Part of OSF’s creed reads, ‘’…the mission of OSF healthcare is to serve persons with the greatest care and love in a community that celebrates the gift of life.’ Reaching out into the various neighborhoods it serves through events, especially one as large as the Ridge Run held every year on Memorial Day, has the potential to get life-saving information to those who need it most.
