August Neighborhood Notes

Beverly Improvement Association (BIA) has once again recognized North Beverly’s beautiful gardens that are filled with colorful flowers and plants in full bloom because of Mother Nature and the hard work and loving care of the homeowners. The landscapes selected for special recognition this year are:  the Crouch garden, 9432 S. Vanderpoel; the Roberts garden, 2122 W. Hopkins Pl.; the Fahey garden, 9421 S. Winchester; the Shiels garden, 9410 S. Damen; the Coffey garden, 8964 S. Pleasant; the Harrigan garden, 9325 S. Hoyne; the Iannantuoni garden, 9020 S. Hamilton; the Coleman garden, 9144 S. Bell; the Nolan garden, 9428 S. Oakley; the Schaeffer garden, 9259 S. Claremont; and the Pettigrew garden, 8950 S. Claremont. Special recognition goes to the beautiful gardens at the 91st Street Train Station and at Kellogg School. Howland Avenue, from Longwood Drive to Pleasant Avenue, was chosen as this year’s “best block.” 

Sip your way along the Western Avenue Margarita Mile this summer! Aug. 1 through Sept. 5, eight bars and restaurants along a one-mile stretch will be mixing artisanal margaritas. Pick up a “passport” from participating locations — Americanos, Barney Callaghan’s, Cork & Kerry, Franconello’s, Horse Thief Hollow, Ken’s, Nicky’s, and Open Outcry Brewing Co. – then visit at least six locations to receive a promotional item and enter a gift card raffle. The 95th Street Farmers Market offers fresh produce, artisan products, music, demonstrations, children’s activities, food pop ups and more, Sundays through October, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., 95th and Longwood Drive.  

“Kitties in Space: The Saga,” an adults-only comedy by local playwright John Enright, runs Fri., Aug. 5 and through Mon., Sept. 4 at Otherworld Theatre, 3914 N. Clark St. Set in a future where humans have vanished and pets enjoy augmented intelligence, two cats go on an absurdist misadventure in space. Info: otherworldtheatre.org 

National S’mores Day will be celebrated Wed., Aug. 10, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Imago Dei Church 

parking lot, 105th and Oakley. Free s’mores and more for the entire family.  

South Specific: Personal Storytelling on the South Side featuring David Donnick, Crystal Clark, Kaitlyn Tedeschi, Baird Campbell, and Madeline O’Malley, Fri., Aug. 12, 7 p.m., Morgan Park Academy Alumni Hall, 2153 W. 111th St. BYO beverages and snacks. Tickets $20  on Eventbrite or at the door.

Join the businesses of 103rd Street for a back-to-school sidewalk sale on Sat., Aug. 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Retail shops from Longwood Drive to Wood Street will feature late summer items and roll out fall favorites.
