15th Annual Beverly Hills Cycling Classic Gears Up for Craft Beer Festival
Bikes and Brews, a festival of craft beers and pro/am cycling, are on the bill for the Beverly Area Planning Association’s 15th annual Beverly Hills Cycling Classic on Fri., July 14, 2017. The pro/am racing event will feature top riders competing in the Prairie State Cycling Classic’s Intelligentsia Cup, plus an expanded festival serving up beer from several Chicago craft breweries, food truck specialties, music by Coyote Riot, and a Kids Zone.
The Bikes and Brews festival opens on the grounds of Beacon Therapeutic Center, 107th and Longwood Drive – that’s just a half block from the 107th Street Metra Rock Island station. The race course runs from 105th to 108th places on Longwood Drive, Hoyne Avenue and Seeley Avenue. Spectators walk the course for outstanding views of the racing action, and find their way to the festival area to cheer neighborhood hospitality. All the competitions are for category 1, 2 and 3 professional and elite amateur cyclists. Beverly Bike/Vee-Pak Racing Team is the major sponsor of the Beverly Hills Cycling Classic, and team riders are expected to compete.
The bicycle race is part of the Prairie State Cycling Series/Intelligentsia Cup.
Paralympic Cycling Champion Joe Berenyi Kicked off the 2016 Race
Before heading out to participate in the games in Rio, Paralympic Champion Joe Berenyi was the official starter of BAPA’s 2016 Beverly Hills Cycling Classic. Berenyi competed in amateur cycling events in the early 1990s, but in 1994, following an accident in which he lost his right arm, he gave up the sport. More than a dozen years later, Berenyi Joined his neighbors on a bike ride, and his passion for cycling was reignited. With only three years of national competition behind him, he won three medals and set a world record at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
